Day 35, Feb 10, 2017

Today we continued assembling the practice bot.

  1. The drivetain was assembled
    1. The bearing blocks and all of the spacing and sprockets are on
    2. Chain will come on tomorrow with the gearboxes
  2. The gear intake was bent ad assembled
    1. The intake may be lexan in the end but this is a sheetmetal version
    2. In front of the intake in the picture is the shooter plate that goes right below the shooter wheels
      1. It was cut and will be attached with the shooter tomorrow
  3. The Shooter and Intake were bend and assembled as well
    1. The standoffs for each were made and the structure assembled
    2. The shooter shafts are done and everything is ready to be mounted to the robot
    3. The intake structure was made but we dont have the pulleys
      1. We had some issues with our 3D printer but the last batch came out ok
      2. We are printing more pulleys and will get them installed and the intake up and running hopefully by the end of the weekend.
  4. The electronics started putting together the PD board
    1. Now we need to get the talon wires cut to the correct length and all get mounted onto the baseplate
  5. Tomorrow we are getting back our anodized parts and as soon as the practice robot is done we will start building the competition robot!

Day 34, Feb 9, 2017

Today we got the plasma cut parts and started building the practice robot

  1. The belly pan was marked for electronics
    1. Short andersons are being made for PD board to Talon connection
    2. The placement of the electronics is set
      1. The rest of the wires will be cut/recrimped to get a neat electronics board
  2. The drivetrain base was finished
    1. The side rails were all attached to the drivetrain
    2. All of the parts for the drivetrain like the versablocks, spacers, wheels shafts, etc were organized and are ready to put on.
    3. Only thing left is to rivet the bellypan and put together the preorganized parts to the drive
  3. The shooter and intake we got a plasma verison too
    1. We made all of the bearing holes
    2. Bent them
    3. Created all of the shafts (with pulleys and spacers, etc)
    4. Tomorrow we need to cut standoffs and put it all together
  4. We dropped off our parts to anodize yesterday
    1. The first back should be back tomorrow (Drivetrain parts)
    2. We will start putting those together as soon as they come in

Day 33, Feb 8, 2017

We got our cut and bent parts today!

  1. The drivetrain structure was worked on for the practice robot
    1. We got the support for the bumpers and are working on the second side
    2. This will be done tomorrow
    3. We can then mount the gearboxes and electronics and drive around
  2. We got all of our final robot parts lasercut and bent on a CNC break
    1. We got a new awesome sponsor who was able to do that for us today!

      2. We are going to cut parts on the plasma tomorrow at Lincoln Electric
    2. Tomorrow we will start putting everything together for the practice bot
  3. We also tested the shooter with feeding it a lot of balls
    1. Some got stuck as our shooter is too wide
    2. It will be 2 wide and split with a divider so this will not happen
    3. Other than that the PID did a good job at keeping the speed at setpoint while we were shooting the balls
  4. Anodizing was dropped off yesterday
    1. Drivetrain parts are there
    2. The shooter and intake that were cut today will be dropped off tomorrow and we should have the parts back Friday afternoon to start putting together.

Less than 2 weeks left! Awtybots roll out!

Day 33, Feb 8, 2017

We got our cut and bent parts today!

Day 32, Feb 7, 2017

Today was a kind of short/not extremely productive day but we got some really important things finished.

  1. We got the hanging mechanism tested and using the calculator it was meant to lift but it did not….
    1. This is with 2 bag motors at 63:1
    2. We will compare to the old one and see what is different and change it accordingly
  2. Parts were cut and polished to be ready to anodize
    1. We got the drivetrain sides, gearbox plates, and gearbox supports ready
    2. We do not have any of our sheet metal parts yet
    3. Tomorrow morning they will be dropped off
  3. Practice bot gearboxes were mounted to the supports but need to be rebuilt
    1. The spacing on the dog gears is incorrect so the shifter does not quite work right.
    2. This will be done tomorrow
  4. The plasma cutter was broken today so we are waiting for that to be fixed
    1. We are trying to find another option, possibly a waterjet so we can get the parts cut.
    2. We should have all of the parts ready by thursday and the last batch given to anodize thursday/friday.
  5. The rest of the week will hopefully be putting together the practice bot.

Day 31, Feb 6, 2017

I’m also going to include yesterday in this blog as we went to FRC 3847 to test autonomous and test our shooter.

  1. On Sunday we tested our autonomous
    1. We were able to use time and commands to have the robot drive forward a meter turn 130 degrees and then drive again for another meter.
    2. Now we just need to get them to work in sequence in our regular autonomous code
  2. We also tested our shooter with a MiniCIM and the new CNCd plates which give us the correct compressions
    1. It worked very well
    2. We are able to get about 2-3 balls per second by hand feeding the shooter. (not shown)
    3. Hoping to get a little more if we get the right grip from our shooter intake.
  3. Today we started a lot of the manufacturing of the parts for our practice robot as well as getting parts ready for anodization.
    1. We got the 3 of the side plates for the drivetrain done
    2. The other pieces for the drive base were also finished
    3. The hopper was bent to the right shape with the rest to be bent tomorrow
    4. We started polishing the parts to get them ready for anodizing.
  4. CAD team created drawings
    1. Drawings were created for all of our sheetmetal parts with dimensions
    2. This is done as our plasmacut holes are all 1/8 of an inch and we drill the holes inhouse as the plasma does not give you very precise holes.
    3. This will make it easier for the build team to put the things together
    4. They also colored the robot to match what we want it to look like when anodized

Day 29, Feb 4, 2017

Long day.

  1. The CNCd shooter was put together (powered by a miniCIM
    1. It worked really well but since we were testing with a motor tester not PID it did not allow us to rapid fire
    2. The constant compression issue has been fixed with the CNC version
    3. Next step is to try and go back to the 775pro and see if that is better for the rate of fire

  2. The hanging mechanism V2 is finally finished
    1. We will be hanging from it tomorrow to test
    2. This one is almost exaclty like the way it will be on the actual robot
    3. We have no worries that it will work but we want to mount it on the robot and see how the robot will react when it is lifted
  3. CAD team got a lot of work done today
    1. The sheetmetal intake and shooter were finished
      1. Still final touches need to be made like:
        1. Position of standoffs for stability
        2. Hopper mounting/attachment
        3. Other minor details
      2. Then we need to make DXFs of all of them for the plasma cutter
    2. The motors for the shooter and intake were added
  4. Hopper was made
    1. We cut the lexan for the hopper
    2. Now we need to bend it and get it ready to be mounted to the frame
  5. Gearboxes were made
    1. The  gearboxes are almost done
    2. The only thing left is to get the 3/8 shaft and put the 2 sides together.
    3. This and the Drivetrain for the practice robot can be put together starting Monday.

Day 28, Feb 3, 2017

We had a good friday!

  1. We started building the gearboxes for our practice robot.
    1. We just need to put the 3/8 hex and gears in
  2. The hanger team got the hanger pieces finished up
    1. The only thing left is to put the 2 2x1s at the correct distance apart and test again to make sure it still works in the new iteration
  3. Shooter V2 was cut today and we are going to put it together and test tomorrow
  4. CAD team worked on finalizing design
    1. We have to get parts cut monday so this weekend will be finalizing the parts
    2. We need to test shooter to make sure it will work so we can finalize it as well
    3. The hopper was placed on V2 of the robot as well as shooter and intake modified with mounting to the base plate
  5. Programming team tried getting autonomous to work but had issues with the navX
    1. For some reason there was an error (resource locked)
    2. Still trying to figure out why that happened
  6. And last but not least
    1. Drive sides were made for the practice robot
    2. We need to make 1 more set for the comp bot so we can send them to get anodized tuesday

Day 27, Feb 2, 2017

Our shooter compression is messed up so that was fixed today and tested

  1. The shooter team took the shooter off
    1. We tried to get the compression constant throughout the intake/shot
    2. Seemed to not help as our rollers are too low and dont give the ball off to the shooter well enough.
    3. We will get the rollers higher and test that
    4. We are also going to try and do a sideways shooter intake (rollers going on both sides instead of on the back
  2. The CAD team got some work done
    1. The sheetmetal shooter is almost there
      1. Still needs some tweaking of the mounting holes and geometry
    2. The Intake is pretty much done with the passive gear intake
      1. Need to make one copy, build and make sure it works well
    3. The hopper is done
      1. Needs a floor and some kind of agitator or ramps
      2. We will test this once the shooter is done
  3. The Electronics team finalized their layout for the final robot.
  4. Programming team kept working on Vision
    1. Grip is installed and axis camera set up
    2. Seems that the templates are not working for vision detection
    3. Will work to figure out if we can do an onboard computer like last year.

Day 26, Feb 1, 2017

January always flies by with build season. 21 days left of build season!

Today we had a little progress and some regress

  1. Programming team changed PID for the MiniCIM
    1. PID seems to be very stable
  2. Shooter was tested with MiniCIM
    1. The shot seemed to be way too low
    2. This may be due to several reasons
      1. Our 4 colsons are really heavy
      2. The shooter hood is not extremely sturdy and does not provide correct compression
    3. We will be changing the shooter to 2 instead of 4 wheels and testing
  3. Shooter was upgraded on V1
    1. Roller to get the balls into shooter intake added
    2. Need to get polycord and connect to the shooter intake.
    3. This will get the balls from the hopper to the shooter.
      1. It worked well so far with a drill
    4. We will also get a better hood/in-take system so that it can have a more consistent shot
  4. Gearbox plates cut on CNC
    1. The only thing left is to bend them
    2. We are going to go to our friends Spectrum tomorrow or the day after to bend the GB plates.
  5. The Hanging team is almost done with V1
    1. Gearboxes with bag motors mounted to the 2x1s
    2. Gears installed
      1. We are actually going to be going 48:36 as well because of hole meshing
      2. This will get us a 3.1s climb
    3. The only thing left is to add the gears and the central shaft with the roller.
  6. The intake was mounted
    1. Intake was cut out to fit the Gear intake
    2. It was mounted again and tested
    3. We have to little compression right now and not enough grip on the metal
      1. Need to add grip tape to the back.
    4. The lexan and sheet are both slippery for the ball
  7. CAD team got a lot done
    1. The final version of our robot (with sheetmetal) is on its way
    2. We are planning to have it ready by end of week to cut friday
    3. The intake/gear system is pretty much finished (above)
    4. The only thing left is to make sure everything has the correct attachments and holes.
